Tonneau Cover Basics
What is a tonneau cover?
A tonneau cover is a hard or soft cover that fits over the bed of a pickup truck, sealing it from weather, dust, and prying eyes. The word "tonneau" comes from the French word for barrel — historically referring to the rear compartment of early automobiles. Today tonneau covers are one of the most popular truck accessories in the US, available in soft roll-up, hard folding, retractable, and one-piece styles.
Are tonneau covers worth it?
Yes — for most truck owners a tonneau cover is one of the best investments you can make. The benefits are real and compound over time: weather protection for your cargo, improved fuel economy (1–5% in most real-world conditions), better security, and a significantly cleaner look. At an average price of $300–$1,500 for a quality cover, most truck owners recoup the cost through fuel savings and avoided damage to gear stored in the bed within 2–3 years.
The short answer: if you own a pickup truck and don't have a tonneau cover, you're leaving practical value on the table.
What are the different types of tonneau covers?
There are five main types of tonneau covers:
- Soft roll-up — most affordable ($200–500), installs in under 30 minutes, rolls up for full bed access. Best for budget-conscious buyers who want weather protection and a cleaner look.
- Soft tri-fold — similar price range to soft roll-up, folds in thirds rather than rolling. Easy install, gives 2/3 bed access when open.
- Hard folding — aluminum panels, much more secure than soft covers, excellent weather sealing ($600–1,300). The most popular type overall. Best for truck owners who want security and premium weather protection.
- Hard roll-up — aluminum slats that roll up rather than fold, giving full bed access ($1,000–1,500). Best for contractors and haulers who need full bed length regularly.
- Retractable — aluminum slats retract into a canister behind the cab ($1,500–2,500). The cleanest look and most convenient operation. Best for premium buyers who want the best of everything.
What is the difference between a hard and soft tonneau cover?
The main differences are security, weather protection, price, and weight. Hard covers (folding, roll-up, retractable) use aluminum or fiberglass panels that provide genuine security — they can't be cut through with a knife. Soft covers use vinyl or fabric that offers weather protection but minimal security. Hard covers also typically provide better weather sealing. Soft covers are lighter, more affordable, and easier to install. For most truck owners who want security and long-term durability, a hard folding cover is the right choice. For budget-conscious buyers who primarily want weather protection, a soft roll-up delivers excellent value.
Fitment Questions
How do I know if a tonneau cover will fit my truck?
Every tonneau cover is manufactured to fit specific truck models and bed sizes. The three things you need to know are: your truck's year, make, and model — and critically, your bed length. Use our YMM (Year/Make/Model) fitment search on our homepage to filter covers guaranteed to fit your exact truck. If you're unsure of your bed size, measure from the inside of the bulkhead (front wall of the bed) to the inside of the tailgate when closed.
How do I measure my truck bed for a tonneau cover?
Measure the inside length of your bed — from the inside of the bulkhead (the front wall of the bed on the cab side) to the inside of the tailgate when it's closed. Don't measure the outside of the truck. Common bed lengths: Ford F-150 (5.5", 6.5", or 8'), Chevy Silverado (5'8", 6'6", or 8'), RAM 1500 (5'7" or 6'4"), Toyota Tacoma (5' or 6'), Toyota Tundra (5.5", 6.5", or 8.1'). If your measurement doesn't match these exactly, round to the nearest standard size and confirm with us before ordering.
Will a tonneau cover fit my truck if I have a spray-in bed liner?
In most cases yes. Clamp-on tonneau covers attach to the top rail of the bed, not the bed floor, so spray-in liner thickness generally doesn't affect fitment. Aftermarket drop-in liners (the plastic ones that sit inside the bed walls) can sometimes interfere with low-profile covers — measure the height of your liner above the top rail and check the specific cover's clearance specs. If you're unsure, contact us before ordering and we'll confirm fit for your specific configuration.
Will a tonneau cover fit my RAM 1500 with RamBox?
Most major tonneau cover brands offer RamBox-compatible versions of their popular covers. These are specifically designed to work alongside the RamBox bed rail storage system without blocking access to the storage compartments. Always confirm RamBox compatibility when ordering — it's a different part number from standard fitment and is not interchangeable.
Will a tonneau cover fit with a bed rack?
It depends on the cover type. Retractable covers with T-Slot rails (like the Retrax RetraxPRO XR) are specifically designed for rack integration. Most hard folding covers are not compatible with over-the-top rack systems when closed. If you run a bed rack, look for retractable covers or check rack-specific compatibility notes for each product before ordering.
What if my tonneau cover doesn't fit?
We stand behind every fitment recommendation we make. If a cover doesn't fit your vehicle as described in our listing, return shipping is on us — full refund or exchange, no questions asked. This is our Fitment Guarantee. See our full Fitment Guarantee page for details.
Performance Questions
Do tonneau covers improve gas mileage?
Yes — a well-fitted tonneau cover can improve fuel economy by 1–5% in most real-world driving conditions by reducing aerodynamic drag on the open truck bed. The improvement is most noticeable at highway speeds where aerodynamic drag accounts for a larger share of fuel consumption. Studies including tests by SEMA and independent reviewers consistently show measurable fuel savings, with real-world estimates typically landing around 2% improvement for average driving patterns. Over 15,000 miles per year at Texas fuel prices, that's meaningful money back in your pocket.
Do tonneau covers keep rain out?
Hard folding and retractable covers with quality EPDM rubber seals keep rain out effectively in normal conditions — including Texas thunderstorms. Soft covers provide good weather resistance but are not completely watertight in heavy driving rain. No tonneau cover is designed to be fully submersible, and most manufacturers recommend against pressure washing directly at the seals. For the best rain protection, look for covers specifically mentioning dual-seal or triple-seal EPDM weatherstripping.
Do tonneau covers lock?
Hard folding, hard roll-up, and retractable covers all lock — either at the tailgate, at the cab end, or at multiple points. Soft covers do not lock in a meaningful sense — they attach with hook-and-loop or snap fasteners that can be cut or forced open. If cargo security is a priority, choose a hard cover. The Retrax RetraxPRO MX and Roll-N-Lock M-Series are among the most secure options available, with aluminum construction and keyed locks.
Will a tonneau cover affect my truck's towing capacity?
No — a tonneau cover has no effect on your truck's towing capacity. It's a bolt-on accessory that attaches to the bed rails and doesn't modify any structural or mechanical components of the truck.
Installation Questions
How long does it take to install a tonneau cover?
Installation time depends on the cover type. Soft roll-up covers take 20–30 minutes. Hard folding covers (BAKFlip MX4, Gator EFX) take 45–60 minutes. Retractable covers (Retrax RetraxPRO) take 75–90 minutes. A first-time DIY installer should budget extra time — especially for hard folding and retractable covers where alignment matters. Professional installation through MobileBedCovers.com is available throughout the DFW area.
Do tonneau covers require drilling to install?
Most modern tonneau covers are no-drill installations — they clamp onto the bed rails without any permanent modifications to your truck. This includes most BAKFlip, TruXedo, Gator, Extang, and Retrax covers. A small number of older or specialty covers use drilling for mounting, but these are increasingly rare. Check the product listing for "no-drill installation" confirmation before ordering.
Can I install a tonneau cover myself?
Yes — most soft and hard folding covers can be installed by a reasonably handy person with basic tools in an afternoon. That said, common DIY mistakes include misaligned clamps, improper tension on roll-up systems, and scratched bed rails from handling large panels alone. If you'd prefer a professional installation, MobileBedCovers.com offers scheduled installation throughout Dallas–Fort Worth — a certified installer comes to your home, driveway, or job site.
